Is Driving With a Cracked Windshield Safe?

Experiencing a cracked windshield can be a very scary and frustrating feeling. Unfortunately, many of us have experienced a situation of being hit with a small or sometimes large crack in our windshield. Cracks eventually tend to spread like a spider web out of control over the whole windshield. After waiting for much too long, you decide to have it replaced by calling someone. You disregarded the cracks in the road as best you could while driving before you had the car fixed. Is it risky to drive with a cracked windshield?

Should you be Driving With a Cracked Windshield?

Small chips in the windshield are usually not a safety concern in most cases. If there is a crack that seems to be growing, it’s time to replace it. Large cracks and broken windshields are hazardous for two reasons. First of all, a windshield with cracks is a flimsy windshield. Once you’ve been cracked by a rock, you’re much more vulnerable to the following flying debris.

The windshield’s primary function is to keep you and your passengers safe from objects like the rock that cracked it in the first place, so replacing it is a good idea. It’s possible that the windshield’s ability to deflect flying objects is diminished when there is a visible break in the glass, since this indicates that the window’s interior structure and layered, tempered glass have been weakened.

Potential dangers include animals wandering into traffic, loose gravel from passing trucks, and other road hazards. Windshields are no longer safe to use after they have been broken. Furthermore, the glass might easily shatter across the passengers and the driver if they were to strike an animal.

Secondly, driving with impaired sight is always risky. Visibility through a cracked windshield may only be impaired in close quarters, but even then, it will improve. It’s impossible to predict when anything will line up with a hole or a blind spot and cause a collision.

Large fractures in the windshield are a major safety issue because of the loss of vision; laminate is usually the only thing holding it together. You shouldn’t get behind the wheel if you can’t see out of the window. If your windshield is cracked, have it towed to a nearby auto body shop.

Is my Windshield at Risk of Shattering While Driving?

If you are driving with a damaged windshield, it is a risk of shattering. If a windshield’s structural integrity is compromised as soon as it sustains even minor damage. The damage is exacerbated by wetness, road imperfections, and temperature swings. Stressing the already brittle glass is the result of the expansion and contraction caused by these and similar factors. In the case that the damage is ignored for too long, the item may break.

cted and maybe replaced as soon as possible. Cracks in the windshield that are in the driver’s direct line of sight are dangerous under all driving conditions, but especially in dim lighting or bad weather. It’s dangerous to get behind the wheel when you can’t see well because of anything like rain or fog. Since repairing a break in a windshield can weaken its structural integrity, replacing the glass is the better option. There are a lot of do-it-yourself (DIY) fixes and hacks out there for windshield cracks, but many may really do more damage than good.

Excellent experience! Called late on Friday of a holiday weekend and got the last appt of the day. Had an unusual glass repair. The manager did an excellent job explaining the repair process along the way. They got it done and had me on my way promptly.

I just wanted this company to know that your clever advertising at a T-Bones game 20 years ago is the only reason I even thought of you when I got a chip in my windshield. It forever was etched in my brain so whoever thought of that, hopefully you’re a millionaire now. Genius. Also, you did great work on my chip!

Wow, what a great experience! Having driven in the mountains of Colorado, to Minnesota and to Florida multiple times, wouldn’t you know I get hit with what seemed liked a pretty big rock 10 miles from my home in Kansas while driving south on I-435 S. on June 9th. After checking several sites I decided on Kryger. I got in on the morning of June 10th and much to my surprise, everything was done by the time I finished a leisurely breakfast and even more surprisingly the cost was $60 less than the original estimate. Also it was $200 less than the major nationwide competitor. I hope you don’t need a new windshield, but if you do check out Kryger.

Online quote portal is a waste of time. Despite completing the intake form completely (confirmed by next day call back from your office), the estimate for a windshield replacement for an 11-year old Mazda CX-5 went from $865 to $1,150. If your online portal is going to miss the mark by 35%, you might want to reconsider its value within your current business model. I'd be a bit more concerned with your long-term business objectives vs. short-term margins, as one would have to imagine you'll be insolvent within the next 5-years without additional market share. Cheers to overpriced products and services!
