Cracked Glass? Fix It Before It Spreads

Fix It Now – Book Service

Deciding whether to go through a car wash with a cracked windshield often raises concerns, especially after common incidents like following a gravel truck or parking too close to a baseball game. A cracked windshield isn’t merely inconvenient; it poses a safety risk and ranks as the most frequent insurance claim reported.

Understanding Your Windshield’s Glass

It’s crucial to recognize that your windshield isn’t made from standard glass but from laminated glass. This unique design includes two layers of glass with a plastic laminate in between to ensure that, upon impact, the glass may crack but will stay intact to protect the car’s occupants.

Types of Windshield Damage

Windshield damage can vary:

  • Tiny Pebble Impact: A small stone from the road can start as a minor chip and quickly develop into a larger crack if not addressed.
  • Temperature Fluctuations: Regular temperature changes can cause windshield glass to expand and contract, potentially exacerbating a small crack, especially under sudden temperature shifts.
  • Physical Impact: Something like a stray baseball can create a spiderweb of cracks from the point of impact, significantly weakening the windshield.

The Risks of a Car Wash on a Cracked Windshield

Is it safe to get a carwash with a cracked windshield? Generally, no. Here’s why:

  • Pressure and Water Exposure: The high-pressure water in car washes, intended to strip away dirt and grime, can force water into the cracks, worsening them as the water moves and expands.
  • Potential for Increased Damage: While the laminated design prevents shattering, the combination of pressure and moisture from a car wash can turn a small crack into a significant issue that requires a windshield replacement.
  • Interior Damage Risks: In severe cases, water might seep through larger cracks, potentially damaging the car’s interior.

Safe Alternatives to Washing Your Cracked Windshield

If your car needs cleaning but your windshield is cracked, consider safer alternatives:

  • Hand Wash: Gently wash your car with a garden hose and sponge, carefully avoiding direct water pressure on the windshield.
  • Spot Cleaning: Address dirty areas of your vehicle individually while steering clear of the windshield.

When to Consult a Professional

If you need more clarification about the severity of your windshield crack, consult a professional auto glass technician. They will assess whether your windshield requires repair or replacement and guide you on how to care for it until you can make the necessary repairs.

Can you wash a car with a cracked windshield in a car wash? It’s best to avoid it to prevent exacerbating the damage. If your windshield has minor damage, seeking professional windshield repair is a swift and economical solution that restores its integrity before the issue escalates.

For more extensive damage, consider a glass window replacement to ensure your safety and maintain clear visibility on the road. Always prioritize safety and address windshield issues promptly to safeguard yourself and your passengers during your travels.

Excellent experience! Called late on Friday of a holiday weekend and got the last appt of the day. Had an unusual glass repair. The manager did an excellent job explaining the repair process along the way. They got it done and had me on my way promptly.

I just wanted this company to know that your clever advertising at a T-Bones game 20 years ago is the only reason I even thought of you when I got a chip in my windshield. It forever was etched in my brain so whoever thought of that, hopefully you’re a millionaire now. Genius. Also, you did great work on my chip!

Very easy to work with. Lowest price by far to replace my windshield since I was paying on my own. 45 mins in and out. No problems since. Wiped down and cleaned the car. Nice waiting room. Highly recommend.

Wow, what a great experience! Having driven in the mountains of Colorado, to Minnesota and to Florida multiple times, wouldn’t you know I get hit with what seemed liked a pretty big rock 10 miles from my home in Kansas while driving south on I-435 S. on June 9th. After checking several sites I decided on Kryger. I got in on the morning of June 10th and much to my surprise, everything was done by the time I finished a leisurely breakfast and even more surprisingly the cost was $60 less than the original estimate. Also it was $200 less than the major nationwide competitor. I hope you don’t need a new windshield, but if you do check out Kryger.

Online quote portal is a waste of time. Despite completing the intake form completely (confirmed by next day call back from your office), the estimate for a windshield replacement for an 11-year old Mazda CX-5 went from $865 to $1,150. If your online portal is going to miss the mark by 35%, you might want to reconsider its value within your current business model. I'd be a bit more concerned with your long-term business objectives vs. short-term margins, as one would have to imagine you'll be insolvent within the next 5-years without additional market share. Cheers to overpriced products and services!
