Choosing where to replace your windshield is a big decision. Whether you go to a dealership or an auto glass shop, understanding the differences in cost, convenience, and quality ensures you make the best choice for your needs.

Do Dealerships Replace Windshields

Yes, car dealerships do replace windshields. They do this using OEM Glass (the glass that initially came on your car), as dealerships exclusively use those parts when working with vehicles.

OEM has many benefits, as it is guaranteed to fit right and give you the same quality windshield you had before it was damaged.

How Do Auto Glass Shops Replace Windshields

Shops replace windshields using one of two types of glass: the aforementioned OEM or Aftermarket. Speaking with a specialist before choosing to use Aftermarket is key, as it may be better or safer to use OEM.

Aftermarket Glass can vary in terms of quality, but it is readily available at any legitimate shop. This means that it is often very convenient to opt for.

Dealership vs. Auto Glass Specialist: Which Is Better For Windshield Replacement

Both dealerships and auto glass shops can deliver quality windshield replacements, but your decision should depend on cost, convenience, and peace of mind.

Cost

The cost of a windshield replacement varies widely. In 2024, the average price was $325, with lower prices considered a good deal. Auto glass shops often provide more affordable options by offering aftermarket glass, typically cheaper than OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) glass. However, pricing is not guaranteed, so comparing quotes from both options is wise.

Convenience

Auto-glass shops generally win in terms of convenience. They have easier access to aftermarket glass, allowing quicker replacements than dealerships, which may need to order OEM parts.

Quality Assurance

A dealership might be the better choice if you prioritize quality and precision. Dealerships exclusively use OEM glass, ensuring a perfect fit and maintaining the same standards as the original installation. Their in-depth knowledge of your vehicle further reduces the likelihood of issues during the replacement process.

Ultimately, your decision depends on what matters most to you—budget, convenience, or quality. Some auto shops may have better reputations than dealerships, while some dealerships might offer surprisingly competitive prices. Research local providers, read reviews, and compare options to find the best fit for your needs.

After choosing a provider, check with your insurance company to see how the replacement is covered. Comprehensive or collision coverage often determines whether the costs are reimbursable, so confirming the details in advance is essential.

Does Insurance Cover Dealership Windshield Replacements?

Comprehensive Insurance usually covers windshield replacements, while collision coverage applies if the damage is from an accident. Most insurers cover replacements at dealerships or auto glass shops. Check with your provider to confirm your coverage and details.

What Warranty Options Do Dealerships Provide for Windshield Replacements

The warranty options for replacements vary from dealership to dealership, but there are certain types of warranties and general protections typically offered.

  • Car Warranty: The run-of-the-mill car warranty covers all damage, including a windshield replacement.
  • Protection Plans: Windshield protection plans will handle the cost of any damage your windshield suffers and the related work to fix said damage, replacements included.

Many warranties exclude the cost of the glass itself. If you cannot cover this expense, consider filing an insurance claim.

Excellent experience! Called late on Friday of a holiday weekend and got the last appt of the day. Had an unusual glass repair. The manager did an excellent job explaining the repair process along the way. They got it done and had me on my way promptly.

I just wanted this company to know that your clever advertising at a T-Bones game 20 years ago is the only reason I even thought of you when I got a chip in my windshield. It forever was etched in my brain so whoever thought of that, hopefully you’re a millionaire now. Genius. Also, you did great work on my chip!

Very easy to work with. Lowest price by far to replace my windshield since I was paying on my own. 45 mins in and out. No problems since. Wiped down and cleaned the car. Nice waiting room. Highly recommend.

Wow, what a great experience! Having driven in the mountains of Colorado, to Minnesota and to Florida multiple times, wouldn’t you know I get hit with what seemed liked a pretty big rock 10 miles from my home in Kansas while driving south on I-435 S. on June 9th. After checking several sites I decided on Kryger. I got in on the morning of June 10th and much to my surprise, everything was done by the time I finished a leisurely breakfast and even more surprisingly the cost was $60 less than the original estimate. Also it was $200 less than the major nationwide competitor. I hope you don’t need a new windshield, but if you do check out Kryger.

Online quote portal is a waste of time. Despite completing the intake form completely (confirmed by next day call back from your office), the estimate for a windshield replacement for an 11-year old Mazda CX-5 went from $865 to $1,150. If your online portal is going to miss the mark by 35%, you might want to reconsider its value within your current business model. I'd be a bit more concerned with your long-term business objectives vs. short-term margins, as one would have to imagine you'll be insolvent within the next 5-years without additional market share. Cheers to overpriced products and services!

It isn’t just about how the glass looks, though that’s important. It isn’t only about keeping bugs out, though that matters.
