Cracked Glass? Fix It Before It Spreads

Fix It Now – Book Service

If you’re a new driver or facing this issue for the first time, you might ask yourself, “Why are my headlights foggy?” According to AAA, foggy headlights can be unsettling and even dangerous, especially given that half of all crashes occur at night. Research from AAA reveals that cloudy or yellowed headlights only produce 20% of the light that new headlights do, significantly impacting your ability to see and navigate roads safely after dark. Before you decide to replace your headlights, there are several straightforward fixes you can attempt. And for those who prefer to entrust the task to experts, family-owned businesses like Kryger Glass have been delivering trustworthy glass services since 1947.

How to clean foggy headlights

Clear Off the Surface

The first step in solving your headlights’ foggy problem is to give them a good wipe-down. Use soapy water or Windex to remove road or bug debris that might have accumulated. Once clean, pat the surface dry with a towel. This simple action might resolve the issue immediately.

Commercial Cleansers

For those who are new to DIY solutions, many auto repair stores offer kits specifically designed for cleaning your foggy headlights. These are often labeled “headlight restoration kits” or “headlight lens restoration kits.” The kits usually come with a cleanser and step-by-step instructions. Many also include a protectant to extend the life of your headlights, particularly useful if you live in areas with harsh environmental conditions.

Homemade Cleansers

If you’re noticing that your foggy headlights are affecting your visibility on the road, several effective home remedies can remedy this problem. One of the most effective methods is using a baking soda and vinegar mixture. Mix equal parts in a bowl and apply it to your headlights, followed by a gentle scrub with a soft cloth. Toothpaste is another household item that can do wonders. Squeeze a small amount onto a cloth and scrub your headlights in circular motions.

For more stubborn grime, rubbing alcohol or lemon juice can be surprisingly effective. A soft cloth soaked in rubbing alcohol can help remove difficult stains, while fresh lemon juice can cut through dirt when applied with a cloth and rubbed into the lens. Consider using fine-grit sandpaper to remove the oxidation layer if your headlights are severely yellowed. Once you’ve cleaned your headlights, you can seal your hard work with a layer of car wax or plastic polish. These remedies are cost-effective and crucial for safe driving by improving your headlights’ clarity.

The Importance of Regular Maintenance

Just as AAA recommends regular checks for signs of deterioration, so should you incorporate this into your car maintenance routine. Unlike batteries or tires, headlights aren’t usually on the regular check-up list for most drivers. Yet, they are equally crucial for road safety.

Prevention and Long-term Care

In the future, you can prolong the time your headlights get foggy by applying specialized cleaning solutions and coatings. These products create a protective layer around the headlights, reducing the frequency of cleaning them. Consider professional services from a trusted provider for a lasting solution.

Professional Help

If DIY methods don’t produce the desired results, consider seeking professional help. Both replacement and restoration services are readily available, often at places like AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities or our trusted partners at Kryger Glass. Professional services can restore your headlights to up to 70-100% of their original capacity, depending on the method used.

Excellent experience! Called late on Friday of a holiday weekend and got the last appt of the day. Had an unusual glass repair. The manager did an excellent job explaining the repair process along the way. They got it done and had me on my way promptly.

I just wanted this company to know that your clever advertising at a T-Bones game 20 years ago is the only reason I even thought of you when I got a chip in my windshield. It forever was etched in my brain so whoever thought of that, hopefully you’re a millionaire now. Genius. Also, you did great work on my chip!

Very easy to work with. Lowest price by far to replace my windshield since I was paying on my own. 45 mins in and out. No problems since. Wiped down and cleaned the car. Nice waiting room. Highly recommend.

Wow, what a great experience! Having driven in the mountains of Colorado, to Minnesota and to Florida multiple times, wouldn’t you know I get hit with what seemed liked a pretty big rock 10 miles from my home in Kansas while driving south on I-435 S. on June 9th. After checking several sites I decided on Kryger. I got in on the morning of June 10th and much to my surprise, everything was done by the time I finished a leisurely breakfast and even more surprisingly the cost was $60 less than the original estimate. Also it was $200 less than the major nationwide competitor. I hope you don’t need a new windshield, but if you do check out Kryger.

Online quote portal is a waste of time. Despite completing the intake form completely (confirmed by next day call back from your office), the estimate for a windshield replacement for an 11-year old Mazda CX-5 went from $865 to $1,150. If your online portal is going to miss the mark by 35%, you might want to reconsider its value within your current business model. I'd be a bit more concerned with your long-term business objectives vs. short-term margins, as one would have to imagine you'll be insolvent within the next 5-years without additional market share. Cheers to overpriced products and services!

It isn’t just about how the glass looks, though that’s important. It isn’t only about keeping bugs out, though that matters.
