Cracked Glass? Fix It Before It Spreads

Fix It Now – Book Service

Sandblasting is one of the worst things a windshield can endure. Its surface becomes rough and forms tiny pits that endanger the driver, lowering their visibility on the road. The pits, in particular, can cause light to hit it in strange, possibly blinding ways, increasing the chances of accidents and other incidents. If your windscreen is in this condition, you are likely asking: What do I do to fix a sandblasted windshield?

Should you repair or replace the windshield? What options are available to you? In this article, we will explore the impacts of sandblasting and provide comprehensive guidance on how to best repair or replace a windshield that has endured this type of wear.

What is Sandblasting

Sandblasting involves blasting fine sand at high velocity, typically to clean concrete and brick surfaces or strip paint, though it can occur naturally. This method is unsuitable for windscreens, as it can significantly damage them.

If sandblasting has already damaged your windshield, a crucial question arises: Do insurance policies cover sandblasted windshields? Fortunately, most insurance policies recognize this type of damage and will cover repair or replacement costs.

What Causes a Sandblasted Windshield

There are several ways a windscreen could end up sandblasted. Knowing how it could happen will help you avoid having to handle the issue.

  • Tailgating: Tailgating exposes your car to dirt and debris, and the vehicle in front kicks up. This debris can pelt your windshield, causing severe damage to its condition.
  • Cleaning Your Windshield with Sand: Sandblasting your windscreen directly often leads to pitting and scratches forming. If this does not happen immediately, it certainly will over time.
  • Shoddy Pressure Washing: Misusing a pressure washer is dangerous and can chip or even crack your glass.

Signs Your Windshield is Sandblasted

You don’t have to lose visibility to recognize that your windshield has suffered sandblasting damage. Actively check for these signs to determine if your windshield has been sandblasted:

  • Rough Surface: Auto glass is typically smooth, so if your shield feels rough or pitted, it is likely that it is damaged.
  • Blinded While Driving: If your vision is regularly impaired by sunlight hitting your windscreen at certain angles, the issue may be due to pits forming in the glass.
  • Grainy Windshield: If your windscreen has specks that don’t wipe off, this may indicate that sand and other small particles have embedded themselves in tiny pits in the glass.

How Does Sandblasting Affect Windshield Safety

Apart from the risks to the driver, sandblasting threatens the glass itself. The small pits that form can weaken the glass over time, making it more vulnerable to damage such as cracking or breaking.

Can A Sandblasted Windshield Be Repaired

You can repair sandblasting damage. Glass shops and dealerships have the tools and expertise to address the pitting, cracks, and coating removal typical of this damage. However, if the damage to the windshield is severe, replacement is often necessary.

Prevention Tips

To avoid sandblasting damage to your windshield, follow these preventive measures:

  1. Maintain Safe Distance: Always keep a safe distance from vehicles in front of you to reduce the risk of debris hitting your windshield.
  2. Avoid Direct Sand Exposure: Never use sand or abrasive materials to clean your windshield, which can cause immediate damage.
  3. Be Cautious with Pressure Washing: Use pressure washers carefully and avoid directing high-pressure water at the windshield, as it can cause chips and cracks.
  4. Use Windshield Protectors: Consider using protective film or covers for your windshield, especially during construction or dusty environments.

These simple steps can help preserve the integrity of your windshield and prevent costly repairs or replacements.

When dealing with sandblasting damage, it’s essential to determine whether a windshield repair or a windshield replacement is needed. Each approach effectively addresses different levels of damage, ensuring your vehicle’s safety and functionality.

Excellent experience! Called late on Friday of a holiday weekend and got the last appt of the day. Had an unusual glass repair. The manager did an excellent job explaining the repair process along the way. They got it done and had me on my way promptly.

I just wanted this company to know that your clever advertising at a T-Bones game 20 years ago is the only reason I even thought of you when I got a chip in my windshield. It forever was etched in my brain so whoever thought of that, hopefully you’re a millionaire now. Genius. Also, you did great work on my chip!

Wow, what a great experience! Having driven in the mountains of Colorado, to Minnesota and to Florida multiple times, wouldn’t you know I get hit with what seemed liked a pretty big rock 10 miles from my home in Kansas while driving south on I-435 S. on June 9th. After checking several sites I decided on Kryger. I got in on the morning of June 10th and much to my surprise, everything was done by the time I finished a leisurely breakfast and even more surprisingly the cost was $60 less than the original estimate. Also it was $200 less than the major nationwide competitor. I hope you don’t need a new windshield, but if you do check out Kryger.

Online quote portal is a waste of time. Despite completing the intake form completely (confirmed by next day call back from your office), the estimate for a windshield replacement for an 11-year old Mazda CX-5 went from $865 to $1,150. If your online portal is going to miss the mark by 35%, you might want to reconsider its value within your current business model. I'd be a bit more concerned with your long-term business objectives vs. short-term margins, as one would have to imagine you'll be insolvent within the next 5-years without additional market share. Cheers to overpriced products and services!
