Sliding glass doors are a fantastic feature in many homes, effortlessly connecting indoor and outdoor spaces and allowing natural light to flood in. But these doors can become sticky, noisy, and difficult to open over time due to everyday wear and tear. If you’re facing these frustrations, it’s likely time to lubricate your door. Here’s our simple, step-by-step guide on safely applying sliding glass door lubricant without causing any damage.

Selecting the Best Lubricant for Your Sliding Doors

Finding the right sliding door grease is essential for maintaining smooth operation and prolonging their lifespan. The best choice depends on the door’s material and the manufacturer’s specifications. Here are the most common types of lubricants to consider:

  • Silicone Lubricant for Sliding Doors: Silicone-based lubricants are ideal for sliding glass doors due to their non-stick and waterproof properties. They can be used on various surfaces, including rubber, plastic, and metal, and do not attract dirt and dust, making them perfect for residential use.
  • Teflon Lubricant: Teflon-based lubricants reduce friction and wear, enhancing the performance of sliding glass doors while protecting surfaces.
  • Graphite Lubricant: Graphite is a dry lubricant that won’t attract dirt and dust, making it long-lasting and ideal for sliding glass doors.
  • Petroleum-based, Wax-Based, and Oil-Based Lubricants are generally not recommended for sliding glass doors as they tend to attract dirt and dust, causing them to stick.

Step-by-Step Guide to Applying Sliding Door Lubricant

1. Gather Your Supplies

Before you begin, make sure you have everything you need:

  • The right lubricant: Choose a suitable lubricant for your door, such as a silicone spray or sliding door grease.
  • Cleaning supplies: A vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment or a handheld brush to clean the tracks.
  • A clean cloth: Wipe away dirt and apply lubricant.
  • A screwdriver: If you need to remove the door from its track for better access.

2. Prepare the Area

A clean working area is crucial for adequate lubrication.

  • Remove the door: If possible, lift the door off its tracks. This makes it easier to clean and lubricate all the moving parts thoroughly.
  • Clean the tracks: Use a vacuum or brush to remove all dirt and debris from the tracks. This step is vital because any leftover grime can mix with the lubricant and form a sticky residue.

3. Apply the Lubricant

Now, it’s time to get those doors gliding smoothly again.

  • Apply the lubricant: Focus on the tracks and rollers. If using a spray lubricant, hold the can about 6 inches away and spray lightly along the tracks. For gels or greases, apply a small amount to a cloth and spread it evenly.
  • Avoid over-lubrication: Applying too much lubricant can attract dust and create buildup, leading to more problems. Use it sparingly and spread it evenly.

4. Reinstall and Test

After applying the lubricant:

  • Reinstall the door: If you removed it, carefully place the door back onto its tracks.
  • Test the door: Slide it back and forth to ensure smooth operation. Listen for any noises and feel for any resistance. If the door still sticks or squeaks, check for areas you missed, or consider reapplying a small amount of lubricant.

Maintaining Your Sliding Doors

Having reached this point in the article, you now understand how to apply lubricant properly. To ensure your sliding doors continue to operate smoothly, consider the following maintenance tips for ongoing care:

  • Regular Cleaning: Clean the tracks and rollers every few months to prevent dirt buildup.
  • Reapply Lubricant: Depending on how often you use the door, reapply the lubricant every six months to a year.
  • Check Alignment: Periodically check the door’s alignment and adjust the rollers if necessary to ensure smooth operation.

Proper maintenance is essential for the longevity and performance of your residential sliding door. By following these tips and regularly applying the appropriate lubricant, you can ensure smooth operation and extend the life of your doors.

Excellent experience! Called late on Friday of a holiday weekend and got the last appt of the day. Had an unusual glass repair. The manager did an excellent job explaining the repair process along the way. They got it done and had me on my way promptly.

I just wanted this company to know that your clever advertising at a T-Bones game 20 years ago is the only reason I even thought of you when I got a chip in my windshield. It forever was etched in my brain so whoever thought of that, hopefully you’re a millionaire now. Genius. Also, you did great work on my chip!

Very easy to work with. Lowest price by far to replace my windshield since I was paying on my own. 45 mins in and out. No problems since. Wiped down and cleaned the car. Nice waiting room. Highly recommend.

Wow, what a great experience! Having driven in the mountains of Colorado, to Minnesota and to Florida multiple times, wouldn’t you know I get hit with what seemed liked a pretty big rock 10 miles from my home in Kansas while driving south on I-435 S. on June 9th. After checking several sites I decided on Kryger. I got in on the morning of June 10th and much to my surprise, everything was done by the time I finished a leisurely breakfast and even more surprisingly the cost was $60 less than the original estimate. Also it was $200 less than the major nationwide competitor. I hope you don’t need a new windshield, but if you do check out Kryger.

Online quote portal is a waste of time. Despite completing the intake form completely (confirmed by next day call back from your office), the estimate for a windshield replacement for an 11-year old Mazda CX-5 went from $865 to $1,150. If your online portal is going to miss the mark by 35%, you might want to reconsider its value within your current business model. I'd be a bit more concerned with your long-term business objectives vs. short-term margins, as one would have to imagine you'll be insolvent within the next 5-years without additional market share. Cheers to overpriced products and services!
