Cracked Glass? Fix It Before It Spreads

Fix It Now – Book Service

Windshield cracks can arise from numerous sources, but stress cracks are particularly troubling due to their sudden and unforeseeable nature. Unlike damage from impact, stress cracks can appear without direct cause, leaving you puzzled and concerned about your vehicle’s safety. So, what should you do when you face such an issue, and what exactly leads to these frustrating occurrences?

What is a stress crack in auto glass, and what causes it? The topic of this type of damage can be very confusing to understand, but this article will break down all the details. All your questions about how to handle and avoid these cracks will be answered in this blog.

What Is a Stress Crack in a Windshield

A stress crack in a windshield is caused by pressure or stress on the glass. Unlike cracks that result from impact, stress cracks form without any direct hit to the windshield. These cracks typically appear where factors like temperature changes, uneven pressure, or flaws in the glass have weakened the glass. Stress cracks often begin at the windshield’s edges and can spread across the entire glass if not addressed promptly. They are usually long, straight lines but can vary in length and severity depending on the underlying cause.

What Causes a Stress Crack in a Windshield

Stress cracks arise primarily from temperature changes or issues with the windshield itself. While these issues may seem minor, they can cause significant damage if left unchecked.

Change in Surface Temperature

Abrupt changes in surface temperature can cause the windshield to fracture. For instance, pouring hot water on a frozen windshield rapidly alters the glass’s temperature, leading to cracks. Weather changes also contribute to stress fractures, especially on days with dramatic temperature shifts. Even the transition from day to night can cause surface temperature changes that lead to cracks.

Defects in the Windshield

Manufacturing defects or minor, unnoticed flaws weaken the glass, making it more prone to stress cracks. Even slight imperfections or residual pressure from the production process reduce the windshield’s durability, increasing the risk of fractures under everyday conditions.

Misalignment

Improper alignment of the windshield with the vehicle’s frame causes uneven pressure distribution, which can damage the glass over time. Installation issues or incorrect sizing can result in some regions of the windshield absorbing more pressure, eventually leading to cracks.

How Does a Stress Crack Differ from Other Shield Damage

The key difference between stress cracks and other types of windshield damage lies in their unpredictability and the inability to prevent them through typical means. While proper driving habits, careful cleaning, and regular maintenance can help avoid common windshield damage like chips or cracks from impacts, stress cracks are usually unavoidable. They occur due to internal pressure or stress on the glass, often exacerbated by factors outside your control.

The best preventive measures are parking in garages and working with reputable auto glass manufacturers and technicians. However, stress cracks are more challenging to avoid than other types of damage.

What Should You Do If Your Windshield Develops a Stress Crack

If your windshield develops a stress crack, you have options for handling the situation. Your windshield warranty may cover stress cracks, though this is uncommon. Contact your warranty provider to check if they will cover the damage is still a good idea.

How do you fix a stress fracture in a window or windscreen? In most cases, the only permanent solution is a windshield replacement. Since stress cracks often result from internal factors, a windshield repair may offer a temporary fix, but the cracks are likely to return. The best way to ensure lasting results and prevent further damage is to replace your windshield or window.

Excellent experience! Called late on Friday of a holiday weekend and got the last appt of the day. Had an unusual glass repair. The manager did an excellent job explaining the repair process along the way. They got it done and had me on my way promptly.

I just wanted this company to know that your clever advertising at a T-Bones game 20 years ago is the only reason I even thought of you when I got a chip in my windshield. It forever was etched in my brain so whoever thought of that, hopefully you’re a millionaire now. Genius. Also, you did great work on my chip!

Wow, what a great experience! Having driven in the mountains of Colorado, to Minnesota and to Florida multiple times, wouldn’t you know I get hit with what seemed liked a pretty big rock 10 miles from my home in Kansas while driving south on I-435 S. on June 9th. After checking several sites I decided on Kryger. I got in on the morning of June 10th and much to my surprise, everything was done by the time I finished a leisurely breakfast and even more surprisingly the cost was $60 less than the original estimate. Also it was $200 less than the major nationwide competitor. I hope you don’t need a new windshield, but if you do check out Kryger.

Online quote portal is a waste of time. Despite completing the intake form completely (confirmed by next day call back from your office), the estimate for a windshield replacement for an 11-year old Mazda CX-5 went from $865 to $1,150. If your online portal is going to miss the mark by 35%, you might want to reconsider its value within your current business model. I'd be a bit more concerned with your long-term business objectives vs. short-term margins, as one would have to imagine you'll be insolvent within the next 5-years without additional market share. Cheers to overpriced products and services!
