Fix It Now – Book Service

Are you replacing your car’s windshield on your own? It’s not uncommon for vehicle owners to consider a DIY approach as a cost-saving measure. However, it’s essential to be fully aware of what such a project involves. This blog post will discuss the pros and cons of DIY windshield replacement. Our goal is to provide comprehensive insights to help you decide whether this DIY endeavor aligns with your skills and expectations.

DIY Windshield Replacement Steps

Venturing into a DIY windshield replacement means understanding each step of the process. It’s not just about swapping out glass; it requires care, the right equipment, and knowledge of how to replace your windshield. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

1.    Getting Ready: First, gather all necessary tools and materials. You’ll need a replacement windshield that matches your car, specialized tools for removal and installation, quality urethane adhesive, and safety gear like gloves and eyewear.

2.    Removing the Old Windshield: Start by removing the windshield wipers and plastic molding. Then, carefully remove the seal and old windshield, not damaging your car’s frame.

3.    Installing the New Windshield: Clean the frame thoroughly after removing the old glass. Apply the adhesive evenly before placing the new windshield, ensuring it aligns well with the frame.

4.    Completing the Installation: Reattach the molding and wipers. Letting the adhesive dry completely is critical, which could take several hours before you drive the car.

While this procedure may seem direct, it’s filled with potential pitfalls. Even minor errors can lead to leaks, an ill-fitting windshield, or potential safety hazards.

Pros and Cons of DIY Windshield Replacement

Deciding whether to replace your windshield involves weighing several factors:

Pros:

1.    Cost Savings: One of the most significant advantages of DIY windshield replacement is the potential for cost savings. Professional installations involve labor costs, which you can avoid by doing it yourself.

2.    Skill Development: Undertaking a car windshield replacement can be a rewarding learning experience. It offers an opportunity to develop new skills and better understand your vehicle’s structure and maintenance needs.

3.    Convenience and Control: With DIY, you can choose when to perform the repair. It also offers control over the materials and tools used, allowing for a more personalized approach to vehicle maintenance.

4.    Satisfaction: A sense of accomplishment and self-reliance comes from successfully completing a repair on your own vehicle.

Cons:

1.    Risk of Improper Installation: The biggest drawback of DIY windshield replacement is the risk of improper installation. Windshields are crucial for the vehicle’s structural integrity and safety. Incorrect installation can lead to severe consequences, such as leaks or reduced effectiveness in a collision.

2.    Safety Concerns: If not installed correctly, a car windshield may not adequately support the car’s roof or perform as expected during airbag deployment. This poses a significant safety risk to both the driver and passengers.

3.    Time and Effort: Replacing a windshield requires specific tools, materials, and time. Without the right tools or experience, this task can become more challenging and time-consuming than anticipated.

4.    No Warranty or Guarantee: Professional installations usually have a warranty or guarantee. In DIY scenarios, you’re solely responsible for any issues that arise post-installation.

5.    Potential for Additional Costs: While the initial thought is to save money, any errors in DIY installation can lead to additional costs. You might spend more on correcting mistakes than on professional installation.

6.    Legal and Insurance Complications: In some regions, there are legal requirements for windshield installation that DIY might need to meet. Also, some insurance policies might not cover damages caused by improper self-installation.

Is It Cheaper to Replace Your Windshield?

When considering a DIY windshield replacement, a common question is whether it’s cheaper than professional services. Generally, the cost can vary widely based on several factors.

1.    Material Costs: The primary expense in DIY windshield replacement is the cost of the windshield itself. The price for a new windshield ranges from a few hundred dollars to over a thousand, depending on the make and model of your vehicle and the type of glass required.

2.    Tool and Supply Expenses: Besides the windshield, you’ll need specific tools and supplies, such as urethane adhesive, a windshield removal tool, and primers. Purchasing these tools can add to your overall expenses if you still need to own these tools.

3.    Potential Additional Costs: While the upfront costs might seem lower, there’s the risk of unexpected expenses. Mistakes during the installation process can lead to the need for a new windshield or professional repairs, potentially increasing the total cost.

While DIY windshield replacement might appear cheaper at first glance, it’s essential to consider the full range of potential costs, including tools, supplies, and the risk of additional expenses due to errors. For many, the security of professional installation, often with a warranty and assurance of quality, outweighs the potential savings of a DIY approach.

Excellent experience! Called late on Friday of a holiday weekend and got the last appt of the day. Had an unusual glass repair. The manager did an excellent job explaining the repair process along the way. They got it done and had me on my way promptly.

I just wanted this company to know that your clever advertising at a T-Bones game 20 years ago is the only reason I even thought of you when I got a chip in my windshield. It forever was etched in my brain so whoever thought of that, hopefully you’re a millionaire now. Genius. Also, you did great work on my chip!

Very easy to work with. Lowest price by far to replace my windshield since I was paying on my own. 45 mins in and out. No problems since. Wiped down and cleaned the car. Nice waiting room. Highly recommend.

Wow, what a great experience! Having driven in the mountains of Colorado, to Minnesota and to Florida multiple times, wouldn’t you know I get hit with what seemed liked a pretty big rock 10 miles from my home in Kansas while driving south on I-435 S. on June 9th. After checking several sites I decided on Kryger. I got in on the morning of June 10th and much to my surprise, everything was done by the time I finished a leisurely breakfast and even more surprisingly the cost was $60 less than the original estimate. Also it was $200 less than the major nationwide competitor. I hope you don’t need a new windshield, but if you do check out Kryger.

Online quote portal is a waste of time. Despite completing the intake form completely (confirmed by next day call back from your office), the estimate for a windshield replacement for an 11-year old Mazda CX-5 went from $865 to $1,150. If your online portal is going to miss the mark by 35%, you might want to reconsider its value within your current business model. I'd be a bit more concerned with your long-term business objectives vs. short-term margins, as one would have to imagine you'll be insolvent within the next 5-years without additional market share. Cheers to overpriced products and services!
