Cracked Glass? Fix It Before It Spreads

Fix It Now – Book Service

When dealing with a cracked windshield, many drivers face the challenge of deciding to repair or replace the glass. Minor cracks or chips may not seem like a big problem, but cracks can compromise your vehicle’s safety over time. Fortunately, windshield sealant offers a solution for sealing minor cracks and preventing further damage. For people wondering, this article will answer questions about what kind of sealant to use on a windshield, whether you can seal a windshield crack, and how to seal a cracked windshield.

The Process of How Windshield Sealant Works

Windshield sealants fill small cracks and chips and are usually made from materials like silicone, polyurethane, or resin, chosen for their durability or flexibility. When applied to a minor crack, the sealant hardens and prevents water, dirt, and other debris from entering the damaged area, thereby preventing the crack from worsening over time.

The Effectiveness of Windshield Sealant

To understand how well windshield sealant works, consider the following factors that influence its effectiveness:

  • Size: Sealant is most effective for minor cracks. It provides a lasting fix for smaller chips, but it may not provide a lasting fix for larger cracks.
  • Location: If the crack is near the windshield’s edge, relying on windshield sealant might be unsafe. Replacing the windshield might be a better option.
  • Condition: Using windshield sealant on a windshield with multiple cracks may only provide a temporary solution. A professional repair or replacement can be necessary to ensure your safety.

Can You Seal a Windshield Crack?

Yes, you can often seal a windshield crack. The crucial step is determining whether the crack is suitable for sealing. While you can manage some cracks with sealant, others may require repair by a professional glass window repair company.

Evaluating A Crack

  • Size and Depth: Sealant works best on small cracks and chips. Cracks that penetrate deeper than the outer layer of glass or exhibit spider-web-like patterns typically exceed sealants’ repair capabilities.
  • Age: Fresh cracks, uncontaminated by dirt or water, respond better to sealants. Applying sealant quickly after noticing a crack increases the likelihood of a successful repair.
  • Severity of the Damage: If a crack is in a vulnerable area where the windshield might shatter upon impact, a sealant alone may not suffice. In such cases, consult a storm window repair specialist for a comprehensive evaluation.

Choosing the Right Sealant for Windshield Repairs

  • Resin-based windshield repair kits: These are typically the best option for small cracks and chips. Resin is injected into the crack, where it hardens and bonds with the glass. Many DIY windshield repairs include resin, which is relatively easy to apply to minor damages.
  • Polyurethane Sealants: These are heavy-duty and durable, and professionals use them to install new windshields. Polyurethane bonds well with glass and metal, making it ideal for creating a watertight seal.
  • Silicone sealants: Silicone-based products are flexible and waterproof, making them a good choice for exterior sealing jobs. Some people use silicone sealants on cracks, but they may provide strength different from resin-based options.

When selecting a sealant, it is best to choose one specifically designed for auto glass. Using the wrong type can lead to more repairs and might worsen the crack over time.

If you’ve determined that your windshield crack is small enough to repair with sealant, you can follow these steps:

  1. Clean the area
  2. Prepare the sealant
  3. Apply the sealant
  4. Allow the sealant to cure
  5. Inspect the repair

When to Call A Professional

Windshield sealant effectively repairs minor damage, but you must recognize when the damage exceeds DIY repair capabilities. Suppose your windshield exhibits significant cracks, damage near the edges, or impairments to visibility. In that case, you should consult a glass window repair company to assess the damage and determine the best action. Moreover, during storm season or when weatherproofing is crucial, you may need specialized storm window repair services to ensure your vehicle’s safety and integrity.

Windshield sealants provide a cost-effective and straightforward solution for minor cracks and chips. However, it is vital to know when to apply them and choose the right product for a successful repair. For extensive or severe damage, seeking professional evaluation and repair is essential to maintain safety and visibility while driving.

Excellent experience! Called late on Friday of a holiday weekend and got the last appt of the day. Had an unusual glass repair. The manager did an excellent job explaining the repair process along the way. They got it done and had me on my way promptly.

I just wanted this company to know that your clever advertising at a T-Bones game 20 years ago is the only reason I even thought of you when I got a chip in my windshield. It forever was etched in my brain so whoever thought of that, hopefully you’re a millionaire now. Genius. Also, you did great work on my chip!

Wow, what a great experience! Having driven in the mountains of Colorado, to Minnesota and to Florida multiple times, wouldn’t you know I get hit with what seemed liked a pretty big rock 10 miles from my home in Kansas while driving south on I-435 S. on June 9th. After checking several sites I decided on Kryger. I got in on the morning of June 10th and much to my surprise, everything was done by the time I finished a leisurely breakfast and even more surprisingly the cost was $60 less than the original estimate. Also it was $200 less than the major nationwide competitor. I hope you don’t need a new windshield, but if you do check out Kryger.

Online quote portal is a waste of time. Despite completing the intake form completely (confirmed by next day call back from your office), the estimate for a windshield replacement for an 11-year old Mazda CX-5 went from $865 to $1,150. If your online portal is going to miss the mark by 35%, you might want to reconsider its value within your current business model. I'd be a bit more concerned with your long-term business objectives vs. short-term margins, as one would have to imagine you'll be insolvent within the next 5-years without additional market share. Cheers to overpriced products and services!
