Beware of Shady Glass Installers! Things to Watch Out For

Vehicle safety is the most important aspect of driving, so we want the best of the best when it comes to vehicle repair or maintenance. Unfortunately, the “best” is not as common as you might think. According to ABC’s 20/20, 75-80% of windshield installations are done incorrectly.

ABC reported that these defective glass installations are so common because:

    • Glass installers do NOT have to be licensed to be in business
    • Anyone can legally install auto glass regardless of knowledge or training
  • Some companies use inferior products or cut corners to save money

These facts raise obvious concerns when the question of who to go to for a windshield replacement comes up; so what can you do to protect yourself from wasting hundreds of dollars and risking your safety?

These warning signs must be acknowledged to avoid a potential faulty windshield installation. If you notice any of these activities from a glass installer or serviceman, contact Kryger Glass for a reliable, trusted, and certified glass installation company!

The Installers Aren’t Wearing Gloves:

Wearing gloves during installation is vital. Installing glass is a complex process that requires delicate attention at all times.

Oils from our hands can interfere with the bonding process from frame to windshield. In turn, this can cause leaks and instability to your windshield. Your glass serviceman should be wearing new, clean, nitrile gloves.

You Drove Your Car Immediately After Installation:

If your car was released to you right after a windshield installation, chances are that the urethane (glue used to hold your windshield in place) has not bonded properly to your windshield yet. Most urethanes take several hours or even a week to securely bond the glass to the vehicle.

Kryger uses DOW Express 30 urethane; the fastest drying urethane in the glass industry. DOW guarantees that your windshield will stay in place 30 minutes after install. Unfortunately, only 20% of glass companies use this urethane.

They Won’t Answer Questions

When you decide to replace your windshield, make sure you ask some of these questions to ensure the credibility of the company.

    • How long have you been in business?
    • Who is your adhesive manufacturer? Does your adhesive manufacturer certify your company?
    • Does my glass installation include a warranty?
  • What is the minimum drive-away time specified by the urethane you use?

If your glass serviceman refuses to answer or simply does not know the answers to most of these questions, you might want to consider a different glass company.

Not sure who to go to? Call Kryger Glass! All Kryger Glass installers have passed criminal background checks, undergo random drug screens, and have been trained and certified by Urethane manufacturers.

Excellent experience! Called late on Friday of a holiday weekend and got the last appt of the day. Had an unusual glass repair. The manager did an excellent job explaining the repair process along the way. They got it done and had me on my way promptly.

I just wanted this company to know that your clever advertising at a T-Bones game 20 years ago is the only reason I even thought of you when I got a chip in my windshield. It forever was etched in my brain so whoever thought of that, hopefully you’re a millionaire now. Genius. Also, you did great work on my chip!

Very easy to work with. Lowest price by far to replace my windshield since I was paying on my own. 45 mins in and out. No problems since. Wiped down and cleaned the car. Nice waiting room. Highly recommend.

Wow, what a great experience! Having driven in the mountains of Colorado, to Minnesota and to Florida multiple times, wouldn’t you know I get hit with what seemed liked a pretty big rock 10 miles from my home in Kansas while driving south on I-435 S. on June 9th. After checking several sites I decided on Kryger. I got in on the morning of June 10th and much to my surprise, everything was done by the time I finished a leisurely breakfast and even more surprisingly the cost was $60 less than the original estimate. Also it was $200 less than the major nationwide competitor. I hope you don’t need a new windshield, but if you do check out Kryger.

Online quote portal is a waste of time. Despite completing the intake form completely (confirmed by next day call back from your office), the estimate for a windshield replacement for an 11-year old Mazda CX-5 went from $865 to $1,150. If your online portal is going to miss the mark by 35%, you might want to reconsider its value within your current business model. I'd be a bit more concerned with your long-term business objectives vs. short-term margins, as one would have to imagine you'll be insolvent within the next 5-years without additional market share. Cheers to overpriced products and services!

It isn’t just about how the glass looks, though that’s important. It isn’t only about keeping bugs out, though that matters.
